Can an erupting volcano eject matter into space?

paul h asked: I've heard the first man-made object in space was the cover for an atomic bomb test hole in the early fifties...not Sputnik. Could a volcano like Krakatoa or Santorini have ejected matter into space with a large enough eruption/explosion?MICHEAL
