The youngest active volcano that rises above sea level in the Hawaiian Islands is Kilauea on the Big Island. The location of the Big Island above a mantle hot spot is responsible for producing this volcano. However, the Pacific plate is in motion carrying the Pacific ocean floor across the mantle hot spot. The old dormant volcano of Kauai, on the island of the same name, is 519 kilometers from Kilauea. Rock samples from Kauai yield an age of 5.1 million years, i.e., 5.1 million years ago Kauai was formed when this region was located above the mantle hotspot. Use this information to estimate the speed, in units of cm/year, at which the Pacific plate is moving over the mantle hot spot.
