Active Volcanos!

I have to write a report on the rock cycle….BLEH!!! Really how it starts is quite juvenile, but our teacher gave us the following beggining:

When little Jimmy was on his great vacation trip to Hawaii he went on a tour to see an active volcano. Rocky, Jimmy’s best friend, was in his pocket and fell out into the volcano in the puddle of molten rock. Jimmy may have lost his best friend, but he had no idea on the tragic adventure of which his best bud Rocky was about to embark on.

I got to where the Rock falls into the lava and begins melting but how long would he stay in there? Until the next eruption or until he melts? I mean would he be melted nearly instantaneously?
